About HD Abdominal Etching

A flat, toned stomach can generally be achieved through a healthy diet and exercise; however, "washboard" abs are very difficult and sometimes impossible for everyone to attain. If you want a defined stomach with a clear "six-pack," plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Del Vecchio offers high-definition abdominal etching at his office in Boston, MA. A highly refined liposuction technique, ab etching can help to remove small amounts of stubborn fat from your stomach and define your abdominal muscles. Schedule a consultation at Back Bay Plastic Surgery to learn more about high-definition abdominal etching.

Ideal Candidates

During your initial consultation, Dr. Del Vecchio will assess your body to determine if you are a good candidate for high-definition abdominal etching. To be a good candidate for this surgery, you should be within a normal weight range with isolated pockets of fat in your stomach. You have a low body fat percentage (ideally under 20%) and have tried to define your stomach through a healthy, high-protein diet, regular cardio, and abdominal strength training. Due to genetics, hormones, or pregnancy, you may naturally be unable to get defined, washboard abs.

Surgical Technique

Dr. Del Vecchio performs high-definition abdominal etching as an outpatient surgery in an accredited surgical facility while you are under general anesthesia. During the 1 – 2-hour surgery, Dr. Del Vecchio will make one or more tiny incisions so he can insert a thin, hollow tube (cannula) to suction fat. Dr. Del Vecchio generally uses liposculpture techniques to emulsify and remove fat but may also use Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) to achieve a more dramatic etching. Dr. Del Vecchio will define the midline linea alba and the outline of the rectus muscle. To reveal a six-pack, he will also define the transverse inscriptions and horizontal lines. Once the fat is removed and the abdominal muscles are properly defined, Dr. Del Vecchio will close the incisions with sutures.

What to Expect

Following the procedure, you will be fitted with a compression garment to reduce bruising and swelling, which should diminish in about two weeks. You may experience moderate to minimal pain, but you should be able to return to work within 5 – 7 days and resume exercise within three weeks. Dr. Del Vecchio does his best to place the smallest incisions in your body's natural creases, which means the scars are difficult to see once fully healed. Dr. Del Vecchio or a member of his team will go over scar care instructions that will ensure your incisions heal cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ab etching cost?
The cost of ab etching will rely on your specific anatomy, the amount of fat needed to be removed, and your personal aesthetic goals. During your first visit, Dr. Del Vecchio will review your concerns, develop a custom treatment plan, and estimate your out-of-pocket costs. At Back Bay Plastic Surgery, we accept many payments and can provide information on medical financing to help make your treatment more affordable.

When can I resume physical exercise?
Typically, most patients are able to resume their usual exercise routine about 3 – 4 weeks after their surgery. A follow-up visit is usually scheduled about a week after your treatment so Dr. Del Vecchio can evaluate your progress and decide if it is safe for you to resume strenuous activities.

Ab etching or tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is performed to remove loose skin from the abdomen to achieve a tighter appearance while high-definition abdominal etching does not address sagging skin. Patients who are already at or near a healthy, stable weight and wish to improve the definition of their abs are ideal candidates for abdominal sculpting. If you wish to address excess skin, then a tummy tuck may be a great option for you.

Reveal Your Six-Pack

No matter how much you work on your abs at the gym, you may not be able to get washboard abs on your own. High-definition abdominal etching at Back Bay Plastic Surgery removes the stubborn fat from your stomach and defines your muscles so you'll see a six-pack at last. If you've tried diet and exercise but are still struggling to get visible muscles, schedule a consultation with plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Del Vecchio at his office in Boston, MA to learn more about ab sculpting.
